I have no ideia of what goes on in Jon's head. These notes are completely out of reach for him, and he sounds horrible when attempting to hit them. Furthermore, 99% of the audience in the US has no clue about what song this is. So why not play something that would suit his (lack of) voice better ? Something like Wild is The Wind or Bounce would go down the same way Dry County does with the casual fans and it would not highlight how shot his voice is.

I get why he still attempts Always every now and then, it's one of their biggest hits. But with Dry County, it seems that he wants to prove something, but all he's doing is highlighting his vocal issues.

It sounded very very very very patchy (I'm trying to sound positive instead of saying it was awful) and I'm not sure about Phil's solo, it's okay... I guess... but I don't want to beat a dead horse. It's the attitude that counts for me, and this was a really good setlist. Kudos to Jon for choosing fan favorites even though he knows he's going to butcher them. I really appreciate that.

Man, that Dry County just got better and better. To be totally honest, the first verse was horrendous. Really, really bad. But by the second verse Jon sounded rock solid. Phil absolutely killed it in the solo (you could tell he looked pretty nervous when he was doing it tho lol). Then when they hit the last chorus, Jon entered 150% mode and did a fantastic job. Patchy is definitely the right word, but by 2018 standards that performance was great in my opinion. Absolutely no reason why they can't make it a semi-regular, Jon certainly looked very passionate and proud about it.

Has anyone got Captain Crash?

I agree. Much better than I could ever have expected.

Shanks ITA solo doesn't get any better does it? Soon he'll be reverting to Bobby's...

How is it possible that (by now) we've had 3 guitarists who just don't seem to be capable of playing a proper solo in ITA? It baffles my mind...

It actually doesn't - don't worry, efpg0708 is overanalyzing things... :D It's obviously not up to Jon's '08-'11 standards, but it's far better than any 2013 version I remember hearing of the song (maybe save for Milan). He's hitting the notes and actually singing instead of shouting or whispering.

While it's not as bad as some make it out to be, the first chorus actually was a complete shoutfest.

If you don't like it, fine, but no need to bash the performance twice in 10 posts...

It still sucks.

Listen to the last chorus. He sung that better than he sings just about anything.

WhamATC 05-03-2018 01:43 PM

Now compare this to if he had sung Dry County early 2017.

This reminds me of the last chorus of Always in Greenville, which I still consider to be Jon's finest individual vocal moment since These Days in Hyde Park 2013:

BJFan99 05-03-2018 02:47 PM

Bed Of Roses - a great performance by Jon, btw:

https://youtu.be/hiUIC5oCkjY

Who could have thought he'd ever be able to do BOR justice again even last spring, let alone in late 2013-late 2016? The last '13 performance even had the audience singing the last chorus, as Jon's voice got completely shot near the end of the song:

Walleris 05-03-2018 03:05 PM

Dry County was really really bad. And if you think it wasn't, you should feel bad too.

Admittedly, I should know better at this point than believe the enthusiasm in JT comment section, but I still expected something more from the last chorus, where Jon supposedly sounded good. He didn't.

This can't be healthy for whatever is remaining of his voice. The more he pushes like this, the worse it will keep getting.

The main difference between Dry County and Always - DC is pretty high the whole time. During Always Jon can shout the high notes in the chorus and be bad but OK-ish and then 'rest' during the verses, whereas DC requires 120% non-stop.

Decent job by Phil though. Not as great as Richie's solo, but enjoyable.

word - dc was very good, not outstanding, but very good

I guess it comes down to what do we want as fans. Do we want an attempt at a rarity that is difficult to sing and also shows rust from not being performed often or do we want a whole bunch of less difficult vocal songs (meaning we pretty much kill all rarities from the 90s and before) that no one cares about and that we've probably heard a lot since the Lost Highway tour. I vote for the former personally but y'all know I've said that before.

Jeeper 05-03-2018 04:24 PM

I’ve heard Jon sound worse on DC.

Also, Phil has an annoying habit of rushing certain solo’s, and in particular, bends.

I feel exactly the same as you. I’d rather him try and struggle, than to never hear those rarities again.

The band sounded good on Dry County. About the vocals - well, "patchy", as symbeline described it, probably suits it quite well.
Kudos to Jon for trying though.

Oh man, thanks! I was searching for the word to explain what I was feeling and you were spot on!

I don't why...but the guy just can't let the note flows for a few seconds more..

I think he made justice in the solo, but this "rushing" is really annoying.

Yeah I noticed theres two for Strangers anymore
By the way "Stranger" only could be one song so I think its and old list and he just adds new songs each tour.

Yeah, there's two Till we ain't strangers anymore: "Ain't Strangers" and "We're not strangers". The other Stranger for sure is "Stranger in This Town".

Doubt it. I don't believe they'll be doing SITT any time soon.

(Unless Richie is coming back - much sooner than even I think he will; and even then it would be a long shot!) :)

For sure they won't. But as someone said here, it's an old list that have been updated. So, it makes sense see SITT there, together with I Am, wildflower, beautiful world (this never even played live).

That last chorus is a benchmark for success now? Wow... that wasn't good at all.

It was great until the ending turning into him shouting and not singing :D

Panda 05-03-2018 06:59 PM

ALSO:

Everyone LOVES this setlist. Why? Because we are now down to ONE THINFS song on the set. I don't even think the Circle Tour ever got that low. Knowing my luck, Jon will treat me with half the album at MSG. But judging by the trend that's happening now, probably not. :D :D
