American Reckoning and Bad Name.

Jon was having a ball in Bad Name lol

YOVANAfromPeru 06-04-2021 05:36 AM

That girl and the guest band didn't sound well on Bad Name
American Reckoning with Jon on the harmonica was okay

Bad Name was a complete dumpster fire. It sounded like a year 9 school talent contest entry. The only saving grace was Jon's voice which says alot.

Agreed. Also Jon didn't sound too bad on Bad Name, and this most likely wasn't autotuned ;-) (not saying he sounded good, but kind of acceptable).

I was pleasantly surprised how good he sounded. Definitely one of the better vocal performances I've seen from the past few years, and yeah I would agree, I don't think it's been doctored.

In my opinion it wasn't good at all. Jon is flat as a fart, struggles with his tone even on American Reckoning, and Bad Name is just an off-key mess. He hasn't really improved at all, this is just another one of those examples where he's rested, puts on 120% effort and maybe sounds just a little bit better than usual in the last 1.5 to 2 years because of this, but still VERY poor for any of his previous standards (2017-18 included).

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong it's still poor up against the overwhelming opposition of historical performances but as a raw, untouched vocal take, it's pretty good in the circumstances.

I mean it's a million times better than that charity show a few weeks back.

Man, it doesn’t make sense to me how Jon can be so extremely out of pitch on American Reckoning. You can basically talk-sing the chorus. It was so painful I had to skip forward on it.

Not much to say about Bad Name more than SHAME on the band. You have one of the biggest rock stars of all time on stage and you can’t reherse properly? Very unprofessional..

bonjovi90 06-04-2021 12:44 PM

Had to skip American Reckoning due to the Jon and had to skip Bad Name because of the band. So didn't really see much of the performance, I gotta admit

Neither did Jon.
Another song sang through his nose.
So sad to see.

That's probably because he knew he didn't have to sing the whole sing the whole song himself and he didn't need to stress much about the high notes because he had Grace backing him in the high notes.

Rdkopper 06-04-2021 03:19 PM

There was a time when I lived for Bon Jovi Interviews and Performances. He had a cool factor and delivered a song like no other.

Now, he just puts me to sleep. There is just nothing there. Even when he put his arm up during Bad Name, I realized that you can even fake that and make it look boring.

As far as the vocals go, this is it. A 60 year old man is not going to risk surgery at this point in his life and career. Plus without knowing the underlying cause, who knows if surgery will even fix it.

The best part was the guy introducing Jon like he was some unknown upstart. That was cute! "His mom and dad would be so proud..." :D

Jonty 06-05-2021 03:03 AM

Is Grace Potter going to replace Shanks in the band though?! :-)

bonjovi90 06-08-2021 07:25 PM

With so many band's announcing their return to the road, I'm kind of surprised there's nothing from the Bon Jovi front.

With every concert-related announcement from MSG I've come across recently, I automatically thought it was gonna be a Bon Jovi concert, because I kind of assumed they'd be one of the first artists to play there again, so I'm kinda surprised they haven't announced anything at all yet as well.

phoenixy 06-10-2021 09:31 AM

I don't know about other countries, but the so called "Bon Jovi Drive-in Night" will be in (almost) all cinemas and theaters in Hungary from June 17th to June 20th.

I recall an interview with Jon from a few months ago where he was asked about getting back on the road and his answer was (I'm paraphrasing) he would love to get back on the road in 2021, but it will "also have to make sense from the business side". I think what he meant was that it's not just about COVID-19, even when people return to normal lives, there will be a lot of immediate supply on the live entertainment market given how most artists have waited 2 years to tour and make money and if you can afford it, it might make more sense to wait another year for a big tour so that there's less competition.

That and also not being forced to play venues at 50% or even 70% capacity. Given how little shows they're gonna keep doing a year, Jon's gonna want to make sure each show can be billed as a sold out date....

Tico's drums sound great.

Dave88 06-11-2021 11:57 AM

Went to see the "movie" last night, we were a grand total of 5 people in the building haha
BTW I am pleasenty surprised about the widespread distribution here, even the smaller markets are covered which is not always the case for events like this

About the performance, well I can't really judge since I'm pretty out the Jovi loop these days, but few things stood out to me:

• Jon struggled immensely on the Limitless bridge and Follow verses
• HAND was the highlight for me. Played at a good pace and not extra slow like most of the other 'rockier' songs, and great energy from Jon
• Surprised to see Be There included in the set of an event like this
• Super happy to see Tico's still a beast
• The HAND smirk on Phil's guitar. Awkward... I mean, nothing against the guy, but simply he does not belong to that era

steel_horse75 06-11-2021 01:48 PM

Seen a few clips. It is what it is. Modern day jovi.
Take it or leave it I guess.... I've decided to leave it.

Now where did I put my BJ pinny and hat.....

I also went last night to see the Encore Nights show at the cinema. The first half was a bit of a drag, but I enjoyed the show overall. Jon's vocals were pretty good by 2020 standards, though can probably thanks post-production on that.

I loved I'll Be There For You, and as Dave already said, Jon's energy during HAND was great. Surprised to see Roller Coaster part of the setlist.

I think I also saw Lee-Ann there at the cinema from a distance :p

rolo_tomachi 06-11-2021 04:42 PM

The only thing that I liked was the performance of Story of Love. Everything felt drab, pre-fabricated, and lifeless.

liljovi93 06-11-2021 07:24 PM

I went last night too.

First half was a bit slow. Whether that's because Jon couldn't properly get into it or it was just a meh setlist to start, I don't know but it felt flat. Rollercoaster onwards was excellent, in my opinion.

Jon really let loose at times I felt. HAND was superb. KTF outro was excellent as was THINFS.

I'll Be There For You was a nice addition. Let It Rain bridge was spot on.

Tico, what a guy. He was unbelievable.

7/10. Would have given it more if the first half wasn't as flat as it was but the second half really got me. I enjoyed it a lot.

Beautiful Drug could work really well as an opener but I didn't like Jon's vocals on the chorus.

Anyone else think he's lost a load of weight too? His arms have gone half the size. Getting that 'old man' look to them. I know he's 59 but they've changed loads. (Waits for people to have a go about commenting on another man's arms)

Jay,
I am two years younger than Jon and yes, felt he was very thin and noticed what you did in the arms. Of course, I myself am getting the old woman sag in places so....I have no room to talk ha ha! Glad for the most part you enjoyed it. I did as well with the highlights being very similar to yours. I don't really care for Story of Love on the record but really liked it here as the extended ending was played which is the best part of the song in my opinion.

Haha! I'm a Personal Trainer as you know so I probably look more at that sort of stuff than the average person but I thought he looked like he'd lost weight/muscle. Didn't look bad at all .. just older (no pun intended)

Yeah, the outro to Story Of Love is excellent!!

I've noticed the weight loss too. Thought he probably lost some muscle, since he wasn't allowed to work out after his surgery last fall.

Can I ask people in the know…with a performance like this, what do they do to make Jon sound better? Is it a bit of auto-tune added? I went last night and it was great seeing Jon sing well (by modern standards). There’s a part of me that wants to believe last night was Jon unedited and back to being Jon…but I know it’s not.

Alphavictim 06-11-2021 11:53 PM

Re-record lines in the studio, and use all the available tools there to make them sound good.

liljovi93 06-11-2021 11:54 PM

For me, I liked how Jon wasn't as out of breath/playing catch up as much as the last few years.

I like Limitless and Beautiful Drug on the album, but the preformance from Encore Nights was forced and tired. Story Of Love It's a gust from the Bon Jovi of 2011 for me. You know that I never liked the 'la dee dee di' part, and here I can enjoy that part. I think Let it Rain is in the same place.

Savvi 06-12-2021 05:23 PM

I really enjoyed Story of Love too. I personally dont think Beautiful Drug works live at all. I thought it was boring and lacked any oomph. Let it Rain was ok. Better than Limitless.
