Alien Life
Another topic with good potential to turn into a mass debate
Do you think that life exists elsewhere in the Universe? There are of course, many sides to this argument. Not a simple yes or no. Science can offer different views here, believeing life on Earth originated from a meteor that struck Earth, brining with it bacteria, which evolved into life. Science also has a probability formula for estimating the chances of alien life existing (the Drake Equation); what fraction of planetary systems contain a habitable planet, and on what fraction of those habitable worlds life has actually appeared. When worked out, these give infinitely small odds of life evolving elsewhere. Personally, I believe that we are not alone in the universe. |

I also believe that the US government are covering up the Roswell incident, but they would be too stupid to have their base at Area 51.
There is probably a military base in some desolate place (Canada,) and they are still working on whatever they found at Roswell New Mexico, July 1947. Also, the first microchip was created not long after the Roswell incident. Co-incidence?...I think not. |

I share the opinion that we aren't the only living things in the universe. Just imagine how big it is and which little piece of it we really know. I mean, we don't even know every kind of life on our own planet. It'd be presumptuous to think we are the big exception. Maybe that's true for this galaxy but there are so much more. A few hundred years ago we didn't even know that the earth is round and now that's even for the catholic church official. So we can't know what we'll know in another few centuries. Another point is the definition of life. For us life needs water and an atmosphere like ours to exist. But what if anywhere a way was found to live on sulfur? - remember: we live on oxygen, plants don't any we haven't even left our house to find such different creatures. I'm not sure if anything with arms and legs and a brain like we know it exists but live can be so different. The other question is the time. Universe exists for ca. 16 billion years (but no one really knows it). And how long does the human exist? - Ca. 3 million years. So maybe we just were too late or too early for other species. Or we just don't recognize them because our evolution is far behind the others. Also some scientists found that there could be 6 other demensions that we can't perceive. We know height, lenght, depht and time. So what if there are species who can't perceive these demensions? That all is hard to imagine and I know that all is hard at the edge of science but these days things change very fast. What would you've said if you had lived 100 years ago and someone would have told you that in the 90's you can talk to somebody from everywhere no matter how far you're away and no matter where you are at the moment? This little invention now known cell phone would have been a miracle.
Ok, now as you all will call me crazy I gotta say that these are just some thoughts of someone who's always trying to find the truth (ok, not always but often) |
Very true. Im sure if there are any other life forms that are aware of us they are probely pulling a vulcan on us and waiting until we pull our fingers out of our asses and grow the hell up.

My friend once had this rather disturbing theory, & I'll try to explain now that I'm p***** so it'll make more sense:
Errmm, Something along different lines of time (Can't remember this bit) but between each line of time :? there is enough time for a civilisation to have deveopled so far - they can reach every planet / star whatever in the galaxy. Hence another race has already discovered us. The fact that we haven't seen / discovered them suggests that they put us here & we r hence an experiment or something. My friend was a bit strange & space generally bores me. Mike |
I am certain there is sone kind of life out there, but as Ann U said, what defines life? Heck, Ann U said almost everything I was thinking of. It would be really cool of we could make contact with other complex beings. Or are humans rather simple in the grand scheme of things? Still, I'd like to live in a Star Wars type of environment. Living in a world with one dominating species is, well, boring.

P.S. @ Mike: Can you really know? |
I think it would be narrowminded and naive to believe that this is the only planet with intelligent life.
