When you want to shorten the word mathematics, do you say math or maths?

Always wondering that. All our english teachers say maths, then I was talking to an American and he asked why I don't say math :?

This is one of my pet hates.

Abreviation of Mathematics has to equal maths. There is more than one sum + Math just sounds bad.
