And you know this for a fact because how?
It's not just boybands who follow what the record company tells them to do. I would say 90% of artists do so in the beginning of their careers. BSB and nsync made some major decisions in their careers after the success happened. Such as leaving their manager, hiring their own people, suing JIVE for record contract disputes, etc.
Sometimes it takes success to happen before doors are opened for you to have any control.

I don't know this I assume this. I Think its very strange that they all sound the same (they do!, you seems to know quite a lot about boy bands, so you probably know this as well) , they all uses the same producer (almost every one has used Max martin, not take that, but the rest...), they all LOOK the same, you don't find this strange? well I do...
suing a record company is not something that shows that these bands are independent. I think it means the opposite, when (who ever it was who did it!) suide the recordcompany they probably discovered that the record company had been bamboozled them! so...
boy bands are a pain! thats a fact, I don't like them, will never like them, and they aren't real musician!

you have a very good and valid point. But no, I do not see them as all the same. You're right about the Max Martin thing. He is a well known pop writer that creates incredible hooks. That's why pop singers go to him. He's the flavour of the moment.
Artists go to certain producers for their special brand of sound. i.e. every hot artist seems to be going to the Neptunes/Pharell Williams for their production because they have a hot sound and they are "in" thing. I'm sure Bon Jovi go to Luke Ebbin because they like what he does for the band (but I am NOT going to open that can of worms!) ;)
If anyone wants a record contract, they WILL do what is told of them. If they didn't, they'd be out on the streets faster than you can blink. Once they've sold a few million CD's, that's when the story changes.
As for sounding the same, Justin Timberlake does not sound like Ronan Keating to me. Not even look alike. So I guess because Bon Jovi and Aerosmith are both rock bands, they sound and look the same? Unlikely.
Thanks for engaging in this debate with me! ;)
