"Tribute to the Troops" - The Distance remix??
A local radio station produced and has been playing this "remix" for the past few days. Basically, it's just The Distance with a ton of overdubs of random people saying thank you to the troops and even George Bush saying crap like "God is on our side America". Now, I'm not against supporting the troops per se, but to f-ck up a good Bon Jovi song as a means to further propagate a war is wrong. Of the hundreds of songs out there why did they have to choose that one?
ok that's the end of my rant |
I don't quite understand it, either. The song really has nothing to do with the troops other than the one line "I'll go the distance..." because of course, they've literally GONE the distance to Iraq. How in the heck can we connect seeing a red dress through the night to patriotism? Unless there's some sort of hidden symbolism there that I just haven't realized. :?

wait what? haha the only thing that caught my attention was the fact that you heard "The Distance" on the radio.but yah i think its stupid as well..to **** up that song..
|
Well, it is better than a club mix. :D

They've been playing the Three Doors Down song "When I'm Gone" re-mixed that way here. Of course, since the radio stations in Tampa don't play Bon Jovi  , I haven't heard that remix of "The Distance". And I'm glad I haven't. I wouldn't want to hear one of the few songs from Bounce that I really like fu**ed up like that. On the other side, if it means that they'll start playing "The Distance", I might be able to tolerate it. LOL.

Well, regardless of what you think of the war itself, the song has everything to do with soldiers, though it could be interpereted in several different ways.
Their destination, though it is iraq, is unknown and uncharted to the soldiers--they don't know really if they will win or lose but they are fighting for a cause they truly believe in. A destination is a state of mind as well as a physical thing here. As for the red dress, it is a dream, of loved ones back home--a wife of spouse most prominently, but dreams needn't be so concrete and unambiguous. It could be a dream for a peaceful Iraq or for their own children. Whatever ya want really, all ya need to do is "close your eyes" and even though you are at an infinite distance mentally and physically, you keep on going, you keep on going (heh). And yeah, obviously, I'll go the distance is chord change is fantastic as it alters the song's dreamlike verses with a powerful finish of determination. Like war. The neverending story could be the endless wars of the ages which are inevitable crossed with the love for his wife, which is undying. It is a beautiful weaving of the topics, in a simple rose-outside-your-window kinda way :) "Don't let it die" the symbolism here coinsides perfectly with love and war, you can figure that out. Plus, Richie has said that while writing the guitars for the song, a soldier going off to war was exactly what he was invisioning for the guitar riffs. So, anyway, it can be interpereted perfectly with this as much as any rock song could. Now whether or not rock songs should be 'mixed' in general is a whole 'nother topic, but just to hear The Distance on the radio should be enough for any fan to enjoy. off to bed B |
whether the war is right or wrong i think......
that whenever anyone hears the distance (that isn't a BJ fan), they will think of the war....which means that it will have stuffed up any chance of it storming the charts!!! (and as a song its good enough to be no.1!!) |

we don't want a nr1 hit either, and it's a shame that they have destroyed one (of two) good track on bounce.. |
I think there is a littlke subliminal patriotism in it....
"close your eyes and see my BLUE skies breaking, through these dark clouds you are the light (WHITE--I would suppose) in my mind I see your RED dress......." Their choice of colours (actual or implied) comes back to the old RED, WHITE, and BLUE. I know I've probably picked it apart a little too much......but it was just something I noticed. Mikey D |
At least it's getting airplay!
