The bootleg is from a different night though. If you compare the versions of Bad Name, Wild In The Streets, Silent Night and Prayer to the ones of the bootleg/ original radio broadcast/B-sides they are not the same performances as the Sirius show. The band did two nights there in 87 so I guess both were recorded.

Having said that, I don't buy the technical problems excuse either - as already pointed out, it was clearly broadcast as part 1...

I wonder if this week, some show will be repeated or a new one? It would be great if Obie can rescue from the vaults the 1983 show at Madison Square Garden, where it all started.

But seeing as how they can't even be bothered to celebrate the 40th anniversary mark when the band was formed... I don't think they'll launch anything like that this weekend.

It'd surely be great, but I honestly doubt it they recorded it given the circumstances (first one off gig, not a proper crew around, all very amateur-ish going by the stories told about it).

I understand. Well, I always thought that maybe because it's a major show at Madison Square Garden supporting ZZtop, there might be some kind of soundboard recording. But possibly you are right.

Do we know if Obie was then the engineer in charge of the band's live sound or did that happen later in 1984-85?

AFAIK, unknown opening bands don't usually have the luxury of their set being pro-recorded, especially with what tech was like in the early 80's. It'd be nice but I doubt anyone really pushed for it in case the band lasted 40 more years haha.
