Not very good. Typical self indulgent of these sort of autobiographies.

Maybe 1/2 a page of Bon Jovi stuff - and nothing of substance. Aside from where / how they wrote Prayer - which we all know - there is no deep dive into any of the other songs. Was curious to read about the production, writing, state of the band, etc. of, say, Born To Be My Baby. Nothing. Zilch.

A good book would assume the reader has no knowledge of Bon Jovi - or even Desmond Child - and pull you in with a gripping narrative style. Such a style would make one want to dig deep into each artist. This book is only good for anyone who was there in that musical era of the culture. Even then, it all stuff we have heard beofre.

Regardless of how well it's written I'm not quite sure you understand what an autobiography is.

It is not well written.

Desmond’s book is a disappointment. The draw for such a book would be the insights into the countless songs he has written and the legendary artists he has worked with.

Instead, we get quick quips, funny bits, of the artists he has worked with. All superficial.

The reader gains nothing of value from this book.

Bon Jovi, for example, has barely two pages total - and that is spread out all over the book.

A fan of the band would be curious to hear how the songs were composed, what was the state of the band, what are the band members like beyond the perfectly crafted personas?

Desmond simply says where Bad Medicine and Born To Be My Baby charted. That is it. Wow. We all knew that. We needed a book for that?

He does talk about Living On A Prayer - for a paragraph- but that tale has been told in every bio / retrospective of Bon Jovi.

Ideally, a book like this should assume the reader has no clue who Desmond is - or even who Bon Jovi is.

The story should be so compelling, non fans would want to investigate the artists more.

Sadly, this book is solely for hard core fans of those bands of that era - which I am - and even then, there is nothing of substance. It is barely a puff piece.

...it's about Desmond Child escaping poverty and being a gay man born half a century ago. Not about Bon Jovi the band.
