The Calling - Final Answer

Similar sounding acoustic intro, guitar solo and outro and generally hits a lot of the same beats musically. It's fairly plausible as their debut album Camino Palmero was released the previous year and it produced their biggest hit "Wherever You Will Go". Though it was only an album track and most of the album was quite generic, of it's time and generally forgettable so I'm not sure if it would have caught Jon's attention. The Calling did cite Bon Jovi as one of their influences though.

For some reason I've decided to revisit The Calling lately and only noticed this now.
The whole style was basically just 90s alternative through an early 2000s pop/rock filter. That is to say, it was Dizzy Up The Girl and Gutterflower-era Goo Goo Dolls. They also toured with BJ around that time, no?

Goo Goo Dolls, Vertical Horizon, The Calling, Matchbox 20, Lifehouse, yeah. A lot of that "sound" was lifted by the band on Bounce and HAND a little bit. The jangly electric with an acoustic tucked lower in the mix. That sound is pretty prevalent in the middle-of-the-road Bounce b-sides. From what we heard of Mona Lisa, hoo boy. That has 2001/2002 written all over it.

Yeah you’re right. Particularly with Misunderstood, I don’t think they were targeting one specific band or song there. But that song just jumped out at me a being very similar in structure.

I agree with what you say about some of the Bounce b-sides being very derivative of that era. Very late 90s/early 2000’s American teen radio rock and could have been on an American Pie soundtrack. Nothing wrong with that. It just is what it is.

American Pie was more mall pop punk, so a little more cheeky than this. This sounds more like Dawson's Creek.

I really like The Calling but you can definitely tell the influences.

The lead singer modelled himself on Jon a bit and I think the drummer looked the spit of David Bryan if I remember right. Well, the hair at least.

I like The Calling, Final Answer is their best song IMO. Shame they split after only two albums.

Pretty sure the singer was involved in some crazy hostage situation a few years ago that only he claimed happened lol.

It may have been mentioned before, but Do What You Can sounds a lot like Caution by The Killers

The More Things Change sounds suspiciously like Room Service by Bryan Adams. The verses legitimately have a very similar melody, close to the same chord progression, and the same "feel". Also, "it's the same damn song with a different melody" (JBJ) / "it's a different melody but the same old song" (Adams)... ouch.

As someone who heard (& loved) When I come around way before I got to Say it Isn't so, I don't think there's are any similarities apart from the main riff (G-D-C-Em vs G-D-C but the riff structures aren't identical at all). The lyrical content are pretty dissimilar as well.
