Default Help with Metal

I went to HMV today to look for new music to listen to and i really want some metal. I looked at Korn, Lordi, Pantera, Machine head and of course Iron Maiden. Not sure what to go for and should i listen to other groups? Could you suggest good albums for me to listen to

And the list goes on and on. Just make sure that what you're buying is not from Finland with their wank production skills and their guitar solo's that are technically impressive but lack any direction. It's like Americans making Britpop. It just doesn't make any sense.

By the way, didn't you ask this before, Russ?

well...let me put it this way, it depends.

What type of metal do you want? Melodic stuff, very dark stuff, very brutal stuff?

I'd go any day of the week with Slayer. They are the best thrash band that has ever graced this planet. I'm a big fan of Diabolous in Musica but recommended it to Alex and she said it was shit so go for older stuff like Seasons in the Abyss or Reign in Blood.

Another one of my favourite bands is SEPULTURA from Brazil. Get ROOTS and CHAOS A.D. Two of the greatest albums ever.

If you like more melodic stuff, there's EdGuy who are always a good listen. Or there's this AMAZING German band called AVALON. Really incredibly good melodic Power Metal.

I am not a big fan of Death Metal although some of the bands have decent songs. Say Death or Venom or even Testament.

Black Metal just sucks.

And another band with which you just can't go wrong with is PANTERA. Try Cowboys from Hell.

Ghehehe, yeah. Wanna buy my copy Russ?
And I'm with Florin on the fact that it depends what kinda metal you'd like. Though you can't go wrong with the recommended Reign in Blood. I'm sure you will love it.

Thanks Well i dont like the metal where they just shout into the mic and you cant understand a single word they say.Is that what they call Death Metal then? Ive got most of the Metallica ones already and will get Iron Maiden. Going to check out Slayer SEPULTURA and they other ones. Do AVALON sing in English? Alex if i like it then of course i will

Yeah, Avalon sing in English but they have very oriental rhythms. I am not sure whether they are still around though, last time I checked them out was over 5 years ago.

Here a short review of Eurasia, the album that introduced me to them:
"Where are the critics of missing originality, when a band not only tries to differ, but eventually manages just that?
The Munich-based multi-cultural band AVALON is one of those bands that have managed to enrich traditional, slightly progressive Melodic Metal with foreign influences that you can surely talk about a successful experiment.

Vocalist Chitral Somapala not only has added his great voice to this album (and the one before, yes), but also a whole bunch of influences from his Sri Lankese home-country, as showcased in the opening "Aurora"; which seems to completely come from this culture.

The following "Burning Souls" then presents the listener with the opportunity to check out the meeting of the traditional AVALON with the new AVALON, so to say, because here Melodic Metal merge with instruments and melody-lines from Sri Lanka, which results in a very fascinating sound, which for sure hasn't been there ever before.

In more than one occasion those elements are brilliantly woven into the songs, giving the tracks a very special touch. But that they haven't moved on to completely new waters is shown by songs like the crunchy up-tempo-track "Temujin" with a great choir, "Black Hole Wisdom", which most definitely profits from Chitrals voice or the very varied "Eternal Flame".

The limited first edition also contains a very good cover-version of the MR.MISTER-hit "Kyrie", which now bears the AVALON-stamp as if it always had been there already.

So you can conclude that AVALON have managed to create an album that has not been created ever before, where tradition and venture meet. More of this!"

I;m not a huge metal fan, and often find 'classic' metal albums to be hugely underwhelming but if i could give any advice it'd be: Listen to Tool.
The only 'metal' band around these days that dare to do anything different.

I'm also a fan of:
Machine Head
In Flames
Lamb Of God
Mastodon
Slipknot

Although gimme some hardcore over metal anyday.

I would have listed Tool in my list except I really consider them to be more alternative than metal. Fantastic band though, even if they do only manage 2 albums a decade

I've never really "got: Mastodon, they seem creative, heavy and competent enough, but from what I've heard of them it never really gels together to form a coherent whole. Might be because their production is too muddy for me, everything sounds like its mixed to the exact same level, meaning its tough to pick anything out
