Default Tom Petty, dead at 66

...and another one?

Any fans here?

I personally wasn't one, but I always loved Free Fallin' and based on his musical style he was in a short list of acts that for the longest time I was planning to properly dive into after spending years of being familiar with only a few songs. And now obviously that time has come...

I really hoped it was a hoax when I first heard it.

TMZ is reporting that LAPD said they made a mistake and Tom Petty is still clinging to life.

He's also brain dead and life's support has been disconnected. So it's all formality now, sadly.

I would expect Jon to do some sort of tribute cover during a solo performance or whenever he gets the change.

CBS News: The legendary musician...Tom Petty, best known as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers...suffered a full cardiac arrest and was found unconscious and not breathing in his Malibu home Sunday night...

Petty played his last show last Monday...conclud(ing) their 40th anniversary tour (with) three sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl...(T)he tour included 53 shows in 24 states...In December, Petty told Rolling Stone..."It's very likely we'll keep playing, but will we take on 50 shows in one tour? I don't think so. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was thinking this might be the last big one. We're all on the backside of our sixties."

Petty, who released three solo albums and 13 albums...also took part in the 1980s supergroup The Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne...The rocker kept his hands full with his SiriusXM channel, Tom Petty Radio, as well. He personally oversaw the station and...interviewed musicians...
Heartbreaking news -- Bon Jovi used to cover Don't Back Down. Saw him live, and he sat down on the corner of the stage and pretended to sulk when the audience started singing Breakdown. He never fell in love with the rock star image, and did particularly good videos, too:

His rep has confirmed his death

Quote:
Tom Petty, the dynamic and iconoclastic frontman who led the band the Heartbreakers, died Monday. He was 66. Petty's death was confirmed by Tony Dimitriades, longtime manager of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, on behalf of the family.

RIP Tom Petty, one-third of my mom's favorite triumvirate of singers (Bruce and Van Morrison being the other two), and the best of them in my humble opinion.

Walleris you should check him, many many great lyrics and a voice I'd never get tired of listening to. Oh and the Alice in Wonderland video was one of my faves as a kid, it fascinated and terrified me at the same time

I very much agree with your post. Now the time really has come to dig deeper into the back catalogue.
Furthermore, Tom Petty had written the most spot-on song about Bon Jovi there ever has been in my book:

Quote:
If you reach back in your memory
A little bell might ring
About a time that once existed
When money wasn't king
If you stretch your imagination
I'll tell you all a tale
About a time when everything
Wasn't up for sale

There was this cat named Johnny
Who loved to play and sing
When money wasn't king

We'd all get so excited
When John would give a show
We'd raise the cash between us
And down the road we'd go
To hear him play that music
It spoke right to my soul
Every verse a diamond
And every chorus gold

The sound was my salvation
It was only everything
Before money became king

Well I ain't sure how it happened
And I don't know exactly when
But everything got bigger
And the rules began to bend
And the tv taught the people
How to get their hair to shine
And how sweet life can be
If you keep a tight behind

And they raised the cost of living
And how could we have known
They'd double the price of tickets
To go see Johnny's show?

So we hocked all our possessions
And we sold a little dope
And went off to rock 'n' roll

We arrived there early
In time to see rehearsal
And John came out and lip-synched
His new lite-beer commercial
And as the crowd arrived
As far as I could see
The faces were all different
There was no one there like me

They sat in golden circles
And waiters served them wine
And talked through all the music
And to John paid little mind
And way up in the nosebleeds
We watched upon the screen
They hung between the billboards
So cheaper seats could see

Johnny, rock that golden circle
And all those VIP's
And that music that had freed us
Became a tired routine
And I saw his face in close-up
Trying to give it all he had
And sometimes his eyes betrayed him
You could see that he was sad

And I tried to rock on with him
But i slowly became bored
Could that man on stage with everything
Somehow need some more?

There was no use in pretending
No magic left to hear
All the music gave me
Was a craving for lite-beer
As I walked out of the arena
My ears began to ring
And money became king
