He’s had another hole created so he can drink 2 bottles of delicious Hamptons water at the same time.

It's probably larynx or trachea.

Yes I find it extremely hard to believe that such an extensive cervicotomy wound would be appropriate to approach the vocal chords. I am no expert in laryngeal surgery but it is obvious that vocal chord procedures are being performed using fiberoptic instruments via the nose or the mouth.

The same applies to the trachea. You are supposed to get in by using a bronchoscope as well.

Open tracheal surgery, on the other hand, is a whole different thing. It would in most cases necessitate thoracotomy and postoperative intensive care and all that. Obviously, that’s not what we are talking about here either.

So I highly doubt the scar on the picture (whatever it happens to be) has anything to do with the upper airway.

A Friend of mine was operated on last month for thyroid cancer and has the same scar as Jon on this picture. You can speak right after the surgery. On the other hand, if it messes with your vocal chords or if the surgery is too invasive, you may never recover your former voice.

That was simply to say that that scar might virtually be anything.

How does Jon sound in this interview? Listen to the entire thing.

Is he ever going to sing again?

As a lifelong fan, he looks great and I wish him all the best in Health!

Gee I wish I wouldn't have listened to that! At first I didn't think it would bother me because speaking and singing don't necessarily go together. You could be comfortable being with me in a room where I was speaking, but let me start singing and you would run out of the room with your ear drums bleeding. I have always wanted to be able to sing, but I just can't do it. I sound horrible!!

Back to Jon what got me with that link was even his speaking voice didn't sound that strong. It sounded somewhat faint and being beside his son with a strong speaking voice probably didn't help any either.

Agree! This could be an ACDF (Cervical Spine Decompression & Fixation Surgery done from the front).
A Thyroidectomy can leave a similar scar. So can a Tracheostomy (post closure)
Do these affect voice? No, and certainly not like in Jon's case.
Benign Vocal nodules (common in singers) are dealt with by Microlaryngeal surgery (approached through mouth/nose)

I wish I hadn’t listened to this.
I honestly feel sorry for him.
Something is obviously wrong. And I am sure he is completely aware of that.

It's not obvious in the beginning but when he's talking about drinking the wine, it's just sad.

I don't know if he'll ever be able to tour again.

I just hope Jon doesn't end up like Val Kilmer.
