What's with the stuff on his hands? Is it permanent?

I've worked out the = sign for fair trade and I know what the bands on his wrists are, but the finger stuff? HUH???

Anybody know? and what's the significance of the yellow and red color??

what the coloured tape? not permanent unless he's a div and superglued them on (which would be kinda funny)

when the album was released they did an interview for mtv and when they asked what that was about he said the different colours symbolised X& Y and something blah.....
