gonna try to explain it in a really fast way...he's trying to get back to his full chest's voice (which he hasn't got trained in like 15 years) and get rid of his nasal voice. Now what makes him incosistent is that to do that he just stiffens up (all those strange faces he does are because of this and because of his habit to sing with his nose) and his throat closes... forgive me for my english but i'm italian

He's doing different things during the "difficult" songs and not all of them work. Is almost as if he's trying desperately to hold on to a technique until he can't anymore and then improvises

It doesn't explain why he struggles with easy songs, specially on the verses

If he wants to do his thing, fine, but his thing of repeatedly bringing out the songs he loves has made the setlists too similar to last time. If the hits have to be played and the new tracks have to be played that just leaves the album cuts and rarities. If those stay the same as well then there's no real changes. Something has to give somewhere.

To this non singer, your explanation makes sense. And your English was perfect so no need to apologize.

Well, this whole tour is one big improvisation and Jon's attempts to sound better than ever shouldn't surprise anyone. One thing is sure: Jon and Rich will make up before they die and that's all that counts for me. The tours and particular concerts don't bother me that much. The magic is still there. I still believe.

I don't buy the excuses about not changing the set lists. These are professional musicians who know the material very well. At the very least, they should be switching around the THINFS songs, they've played the whole album at least 4 times.

That new years day mistake that was linked was pretty small and at least Jon has mellowed to let the odd mistake slide these days, probably knowing how bad he sounds.

As has been said by many, these filler songs have been doing the rounds for a decade. Wgigo, follow, lost highway. The excuses are lame, are people seriously saying that in this bands vast catalogue they couldn't replace these songs? "Oh but Wgigo lets him wave to the fans with seats behind him" So what? He could do one wild night and do the same thing. Swap out lost highway for I'd die for you, follow for Runaway, then even if the set list stayed that way for the next few months it's something slightly different.

Ignoring the new songs, if you asked a casual concert goer to make a bon Jovi set list, most of those songs would not be anywhere near it.

I get what you mean. But he's been doing those strange faces since 2008 (he did them before, but not as noticeably, Giants Stadium from 2006 comes to mind) when he started getting better in terms of hitting the notes but more nasal. I actually know a little bit about singing (emphasis on a little) so I never understood why he looked and sounded like this while singing through his nose when it's supposed to be a gentler method, he shouldn't be straining so much! Or maybe different vocal coaches have different techniques and mine is shit lol

Thanks for the technical info. I actually think I remember another poster who also knew about singing and answered me a while back, but I haven't been able to find the thread. I love learning more

Couldn't agree more.

True, but then you'd have more hits/classic songs and it would look more like a nostalgia band/concert. They always brag about how It's My Life and other songs/albums brought a whole new generation of fans to the band. I'd guess that's got something to do with it, as well - play some songs the newer fans could relate to (from Crush onwards, i.e. from the 2000s).

That wouldn't rule out One Wild Night or Love's The Only Rule or something like that, yes. But just imagine for a second that if Jon thinks highly of a song, or reckons that fans do, then why give it to the audience at show A and not play it at show B? Maybe he just doesn't want to disappoint "us". Or it's just his "two for you, one for me" thing, which is totally fine with me.

Don't get me wrong - I love I'd Die For You, Runaway, and so on. But I also f*cking love the talkbox solo in WGIGO, probably more than OWN. Tastes are different. Hell, I like WWBTF, even ILTT and CC, and totally love songs like The More Things Change. And I'm not a casual, new fan, or from the States

Also, while great for us die-hards, the 3-4 song acoustic set they used to do in the middle far more drags the casual audience down than mid-tempo songs like LH, like they're doing now...

The only thing I can actually hear is that Shanks went straight into the guitar lick when the song actually went straight into the second verse after the chorus. That small second that hardly anybody noticed or care about was the "Big mistake"??
