Default Have A Nice Day live

Aloha !

Before the usual backstagers and other SebIalwaysdisagreewithwhatyousaybeforeIeventhinkab outwhatyousay-ers show up, let me first say that I don't think that Have A Nice Day is crap, and that I do think the live version is good.

However, I doubt if anyone has heard it, but so far Jon has never pulled of HAND live like he does on the studio version, so I think it's safe to say that in the studio they've used several takes of a chorus to complete it and make it one big chorus, or they worked on his voice in the studio by using computers and stuff, just like they work on the voices of the pop stars he "hates" so much. It's a shame he isn't capable of doing it live though, even while it's tuned down half a step as usual as it takes a lot of the power out of the chorus, if not most of the power out of it.

Jon isn't othe only one to blame though, there are probably about 3 guitars in the song, and there's only one guitar live, as Jon doesn't play the acoustic part when performing the song in front of the audience. When they go on tour, Bobby will probably fill in on that one. The band should've decided to make it a song that's able to be played live just like the studio version, instead of filling it up with lots of guitars, but it seems like they just can't step away from using lots of layers.

In the end Have A Nice Day is just like Everyday, Bounce and It's My Life one of those songs that'll probably only sound truly great as the album version. However, I must say, it's a big step forward from the last three I mentioned, which just sound crap when they're played live. This isn't the case with Have A Nice Day, which still holds up without all the effects they uses. The live version just doesn't match the studio version, just like what seems to be the case with most of the songs they've recorded since 2000.

So, does anyone agree?

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

only partly, while you do have a point, it's very rare that the vocals done in the studio match the live vocals for any act these days.
This is just my opinion but that's just what I've seen/heard out there.
To be honest, I don't miss the accoustic layer when it's played live, and Bobby will probably play rythm electric guitar on the song.
On the whole I also think the song suffers also because of the background vocals, they're so high in the studio version I just don't think they match up to well live.
All in all, it's a great live tune.

I can't say that I'd usually agree with what you say, but in this instance I do because you sound more like you are making a genuine point than just shit stirring. I think that most people here will agree with you, except the type of people you mentioned that just generally hate you.

The song doesn't seem to have any power performed live. When I heard it from the AMA's I thought that despite Jon's voice sounding weak I felt that he and the band did sound quite enthusiastic performing it, and perhaps to a lesser extent at Live8 too.

I saw the WMA's today though and thought that the song sounded worse than before, perhaps due to the mix on the show, which did sound terrible, but in addition to Jon's voice sounding weak I didn't think that any of them sounded into it very much. To be fair each time they have performed it it has been part of a very short set so they perhaps didn't care too much so didn't give it their all, so hopefully when the tour hits they will be up for it and giving more in their performance.

I have never really liked hearing It's My Life performed live because I think it lacks something that the studio recording had. It's nothing in terms of Jons vocals or any of the bands playing or their vocals, it just doesn't seem the have the same effect on me as the studio version. I also think that Everyday is a little boring live, though the studio version isn't much more than It's My Life 2 anyway

I don't think that every song since 2000 sounds bad live thoug. A couple of my favourites live are Just Older and Next 100 Years, both of which I think sound good live. Also I think that tracks like One Wild Night can be done well, and also certain performances of Undivided and especially The Distance with the solo at the end.

I think they do seem to play with perhaps less passion than they did before, some of the 95/96 shows that I've heard they sounded great and like they were really enjoying the shows, but I think something seems missing now. Some shows still have a lot of energy, but I don't think it's as often as it used to be.

what i saw on the music awards was more the sound that anything that ruined it though I'll agree jon can't sing the chorus like he can in the studio but again doing it in one go as opposed to having as many goes as you need, jumping in on segments etc... plus the fact it'll have vocal exciters and tonnes of outboard stuff on the vocal track as well as being mastered....

there's a big difference in set ups.

I'm really worried about "I Am"... There's no way that Jon will sing that chorus live, I doubt of it...

Since I wasn't in the studio to see Jon lay down his vocals on HAND, I won't comment on your vocals being doctored opinion. I've seen HAND performed live 4 times. At Live 8, it was played a bit slow. The other three times I saw it, Milwaukee, Michigan and for the CMT Crossroads show it seemed much better. Jon's vocals seemed fine to me, yes, maybe not as strong live but very clear. I thought the CMT performance was very good and I heard it twice that night. But, like someone else commented Jon's vocals never quite replicate the studio version, I Believe comes to mind. And I'm not talking about I Believe sung now, I'm talking about on the KTF tour. Being stationary in the studio and not moving like he does on stage would also play a part in the vocals being different woudn't it?

All in all I think HAND holds up better than Everyday live.

Absolutely... I think the sound is much more "full" than the rest of the them. I think it'll sound different on Tour. We've been hearing the promo gigs and from what I remember, Bounce sounded so much different on Tour than in the Promo Gigs. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

To be honest I prefer the live version because it sounds heavier. I don't like the acoustic guitars on the studio version and I think that the song would have been better without them. I think that this song has great potential for a live performance.

I'm not disagreeing with you Seb, (not yet anyway) but what are you basing this on?? The recordings you have heard of live 8 and the WMa's which I hear the sound is terrible for the whole show?? Or have you been and seen and heard it live??? Seriously, I'm not trying to give you grief I would really like to know.

The recordings weren't the best, but you're still able to hear which lines Jon doesn't sing live, and able to hear if it loses it's power or not. And he doesn't sing the Ooooh's after the verses, and sounds out of breath already. And when you realize that it's tuned down half a step, so he should be perfectly capable of singing it live. I've just seen the WMA performance, and to be honest, Jon was crap in my opinion. The verses were strong, but that's about it.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan
