Default The Vox Box

Good Morning, good afternoon and good evening!!
I have just joined this forum, but believe you me I have watched it for some time (around about since Crush came out!). I gotta hand it to most of you guys, I learn everything I need to know about the band from you!
I am not a novice when it comes to BJ, have been listening to them now for 21 years and gathered quite an extensive collection of singles, rarites etc.

My opening question I would like to put to you is regarding the "Vox Box" that Richie frequents occasionally.

The only songs I know that it has been used for are Bounce, IWTBL, LOAP, IML & Everyday. I must admit that I really dig it, and was pleased to see it make a comeback in 2000. I thought it might have been dispensed with come HAND - and then IWTBL took it to a new level. Now I haven't listened to all of the snippets off LH (waiting for release), but I assume that it isn't present on the new album. I feel that it is a unique sound that sets the band apart from the rest - especially if you were a casual listener. But still it isn't needed to make a great album (eg: NJ,KTF TD etc.)

Question: Does the inclusion of the"Vox Box", in your opinion, make a more definitive sound for BJ?

PS: And why doesn't DC update it's main page? IE: What is Richie's contribution to the band/no listing of 100 million in albums etc?

It is used on the new album...on the song 'We Got It Goin' On'...

Its gd but i feel something Jovi use it for the sake of it...it does add something though obviousley in songs such as LOAP and IML but on songs like I Want To Be Loved it's just there for the sake of it and it doesn't work well at all.... but its good if they just use it when it needs to be used and dont over use it...else it will just get boring!

It sounds good on the new album though! could have got away without it though just with a beafy distortion sound instead...cant decide which i would prefer but it sounds gd all the same!

Hello there

Its more commonly called a Talk box by the way, and yes it is actually on the new album on a track called 'We got it goin on'.

Its also on the tracks Love me back to life, and All i want is everything of These Days. It is seen now as a kind of signiture sound i guess, but i think theyr overdoing it now slightly and it is now quite gimmickey!

I don't know why it is different, but I have always known it as a vox box. Maybe it's an Aussie thing...........

I think that Jovi's 'sound' is more than just the talk-box. The tone, melodies and harmonies are all characteristic features and instantly recognisable traits of a Bon Jovi song so for the talk-box to be considered a 'signature sound' is IMO a little superficial.

I do think they over-use it but at least it is always kept rather subtle on newer songs. How critics can claim that they are trying to write LOAP part 30 just because they use it in any given song shows just how little they actually know about music. It is an effect at the end of the day - just like the wah pedal and countless others are. It should be used to colour a sound (like in Everyday) or song (as it does on LOAP and IML) but shouldn't be used perhaps as much as it is.

The way I see it is, if you're gonna use it, USE IT! Like they have on 'We Got It Goin' On' which features a real talk-box solo. It has to warrant it's place in a track so give it some balls and not some half-arsed, subtle flavouring in a song so that you can only hear it if you really listen for it!

Off the top of my head, the talkbox is used in

Prayer
All I Want Is Everything
It's My Life
One Wild Night (2001 version)
Everyday
Bounce
One Wild Night (2001 version)
Love Me Back To Life
I Want To Be Loved
We Got It Going On (love the use of the talkbox in this one)

I think its a good effect, and not overused.
