Default Billboard: Top 10 awesome oscar performances

8. Jon Bon Jovi, 1991

From his magnificently teased hair to his tight vest and pants, Jon Bon Jovi and his band of Jersey rockers made the '91 Oscars something to remember. Bon Jovi performed "Blaze of Glory," the high-octane ballad written for "Young Guns II" that ultimately lost "Best Original Song" to the Stephen Sondheim-penned, Madonna-performed song "Sooner or Later" (from "Dick Tracy"). The performance was electric, as Bon Jovi poured his heart soul into the epic lyrics: "I don't know where I'm going/ Only God knows where I've been/ I'm a devil on the run." Blazing, indeed.

And wouldn't we all like to see a glimpse of that passion these days?

I remember being so psyched that the band was there that night, and not just Jon. I also remember being in complete shock that that shit Madonna song won. What a joke.

Ya know, I'm not mad about this performance. Obviously the power in Jon's voice is impressive and the band rocked but it feels more like Jon shouts or screams the song than actually sings it.

I know everyone likes to bitch and moan about how much Jon's voice has supposedly deteriorated in the last few years but without any doubt I would prefer the MSG DVD version of Blaze of Glory to this one. Granted, Jon's voice in 2008 doesn't have the same raw power as 1991, but it's still very powerful and it's much more controlled, and that to me is me is far more attractive.

I still remember being on the phone with my best friend watching the show "together" and we both screamed our heads off when we saw that the whole band was there. I remember all that tension and worry about whether or not Bon Jovi was going to get back together at the time. I can't believe Blaze didn't win the Oscar. It was far better than that song Madonna performed.

I'd like to think that Jon swaggered in knowing he wasn't gonna win but knowing that he was gonna blow 'em away anyway - just to show them what they could have had as a winner.

Yeah, it's a great performance, but I'm not a big fan of it. Like someone said, I prefer the MSG version to this, mostly because the whole band sounds much better now when they are older. However, my favorite one is from Live From London DVD. I think that These Days tour was the very peak for the band in terms of performances - the band really sounded better together than any other tour before that at that point and Jon voice was still great and undamaged by smoking.
