Default Prayer Live Chords

Kinda aimed towards you guitar buffs out there (ie. Gavin and Jim , among others).

What chords does Richie play when he does Prayer live, specifically the pre-chorus and chorus? I play it like , but Richie plays it like THIS. His hands stay close to the headstock, instead of sliding up the neck towards the body. I'm not desperate to find out, just curious.

Looks like he's moving away from the straightforward power chord that is on the studio version. If you look up the following chords (if you don't already know them):

Cadd9

D Major

E minor.

They're the chords he is playing basically.

Well Richie played powerchords on the studio album, and plays more usual chords live nowdays. Hard to explain, something like this (a very basic sketch, just so you get it):

Studio version
Pre-chorus
e---------------------------------------------------------
B---------------------------------------------------------
G--5--7--9---------5--7--9--9--7--5--7-7-77-------------
D--5--7--9----x-3--5--7--9--9--7--5--7-7-77-------------
A--3--5--7---------3--5--7--7--5--3--5-5-55-------------
E---------------------------------------------------------

Chorus
e---------------------------------------------------------
B---------------------------------------------------------
G------5--7------5--7------------------------------------
D--2---5--7---5--5--7----x-2-----------------------------
A--2---3--5---5--3--5------------------------------------
E--0----------3-------------------------------------------

Something like that

Live he plays the entire chords, more diffrent tones in the chord. Don't know how to explain it in english, but live he plays it like this (again, very hazy sketch)

Live versiob
Pre-chorus
e--3--2--0---------3--2--0--0--2---3---2-2-22----------------
B--3--3--0---------3--3--0--0--3---3---3-3-33---------------
G--0--2--0---------0--2--0--2--2---0---2-2-22---------------
D--2--0--2---x 3---2--0--2--2--0---2---0-0-00---------------
A--3-----2---------3-----2--2------3-------------------------
E--------0----------------0--0--------------------------------

Chorus
e-0---3---2---3---3--2--------------------------------------
B-0---3---3---3---3--3--------------------------------------
G-0---0---2---0---0--2--------------------------------------
D-2---2---0---0---2--0--------------------------------------
A-2---3-------x---3-----------------------------------------
E-0-----------3----------------------------------------------

Don't really know if it was this you wondered. But I guess so, and I hope you understand my fast mounted guitartab

Yeah what everyone else has said. He's playing Cadd9, D (or Dsus2 xx0230) and Em

Bobby's probably playing the power chords, you don't want 2 guitars playing the exact same parts.

Yeah, exactly what they said, although I seem to remember him playing the open chords before Bobby was in the band so it must just be a personal taste thing for him.

I actually prefer the sound you get from the power chords as the way Richie plays it can sound a little too muddy to my ears. He possibly plays it that way as it's easier to move between chords without needing to look at the neck as often.

You would think that, but more often than not he bobby just doubles richie (or triples Jon).

Well that's just redundant.

I actually quite like Bobby's solos as they add a different flavour to Jovi live shows and he's pretty melodic but if he's just copying the other guitars 95% of the time then he's really redundant.
