hi!

might be a strange topic but would you say that our five (hugh included) boys make an intelligent and educated impression? i mean just concerning the languge and the why they express themeselves! It's difficult for people to say something about it when they don't have english as their native language! do you know what i mean??

Jon finished high school barely (with Dorothea's help) but he is obviously much more intelligent than his grades would show. His senior year report card is on the Bon Jovi wall at the rock and roll hall of fame in Cleveland and I saw it last year. It was C's and D's for the most part. Richie has had one year of college. Dave was in college and was about to be accepted at Julliard when Runaway hit and the band was formed. I don't know about Tico. There is education and intelligence. I know lots of very educated people who have no common sense and no sense about how to deal with people and I also know of very successful people (Bill Gates for example) who did not complete college.

I do intelligence testing for a living and I've studied intelligence quite a bit. Jon comes across as someone who's not only "gifted," but highly gifted. It's very common for someone as bright as I would guess he is to be a terrible student--they're bored in class and their focus is elsewhere. Jon focused very young on becoming a rock star and schoolwork didn't fit into that plan. He did well enough to get by on his way to getting where he wanted to be. It's like his story that he didn't take the SATs because you didn't have to have them to be a rock star. It was pointless for him. His 6th grade teacher has commented that he was a wiz at math, but it was effortless. He was one of those kids who drove his teachers crazy because he had so much potential and wouldn't use it conventionally.

Jon's mother has told a story about Jon being 3 years old and sneaking out of their apartment to go ask his neighbor for cereal. He would move a chair, unlock the door, go out, get his cereal, come back, lock the door back and put the chair back in place. He did this several times and his mother never caught on until a neighbor got tired of it and brought him home and yelled at Mrs. B. for being a lousy mother. She worked nights and slept some during the day. Jon has referenced the same story a few times joking about how he had his little rap down pat so he could get the cereal he wanted, but Mrs. B. went into more detail on a fan club trip. Now, just think about what this kid was doing. Do you have any idea the kind of advanced cognitive processing it would take a child that young to not only figure out to move the chair and unlock the door, but to put it back so he wouldn't get caught?!?! Anyway, the end of the story was Mrs. B. arranged with that neighbor to babysit Jon while she got some sleep in the day.

The way Jon comes across and has always come across was that he was thinking on a bit of a different plain than most of us with a drive and creative energy that seems to know no bounds. That's one reason I've always found him fascinating. I'd love to test and anaylize him. LOL

Becky, those are great stories. As a mother of two gifted children I can attest to how schoolwork is often the last priority. Being bored in class is one of the traits that often triggers testing for the gifted program at my kids's school- I don't think they were so in tune to that back then when Jon was in school.

If I remember correctly he received an honorary doctorate from Monmouth University.
