Default Clapton's Wonderful Tonight / Jovi's You Had Me From Hello

Has anyone else noticed the uncanny similarity in the story told in these songs.

Maybe I'm reading to much into it. Here are the lyrics. What dod you think?

1st Verse

Wonderful Tonight

It's late in the evening; she's wondering what clothes to wear.
She puts on her make-up and brushes her long blonde hair.
And then she asks me, "Do I look all right?"
And I say, "Yes, you look wonderful tonight."

You Had Me At Hello
At the mirror you fix your hair and put your makeup on
You're insecure about what clothes to wear
I can't see nothing wrong
To me you look so beautiful when you can't make up your mind
It's half past eight, it's getting late
It's OK, take your time

(pretty obvious that both versus are about getting ready to go out)

2nd Verse

Wonderful Tonight

We go to a party and everyone turns to see
This beautiful lady that's walking around with me.
And then she asks me, "Do you feel all right?"
And I say, "Yes, I feel wonderful tonight."

You Had Me At Hello
When we walk into a crowded room it's like we're all alone
Everybody tries to kidnap your attention
You just smile and steal the show
You come to me and take my hand
We start dancin' slow
You put your lips up to my ear and whisper way down low

(ok, now they both go to a party and then the girl comes and talks to the boy)

There really is no third verse comparison because "You Had Me.." only has two real versus.

Obviously, these songs sound pretty different, but I do think that this song influences Jon. Of course it's been well documented that this song stemmed from his time on Ally McBeal, but I wouldn't be surprised if he admitted it at some point.

***OK - I'm a HUGE moron. Thank you to Derek Bliss for correctly pointing out that "You Had Me At Hello" was inspired by Jerry McGuire. I'm totally embarassed and feel like I've lost a ton of credibility as a true fan. I ask for this message board's forgiveness for such an obvious error. ***

Regards,

-t

The storylines are very similar. But You Had Me From Hello wasn't inspired by Ally McBeal (Open All Night was.) You Had Me From Hello was the line they pulled from Jerry McGuire.

smells to both! it could fit perfectly in a jon solo album or in a sambora solo album. so i'm glad it's in a bj album

they should play it more often, as they did in the 'these days' gig.

Anyone notived how much "Open All Night" sounds like "Down By The River" by Albert Hammond, only slowed down? Listen to them if you can, it's hilarious...
