Bon Jovi has been there for many firsts in my life.
My most memorable Christmas present was a cassette of Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet." I was 8 years old.
It was the first piece of music I ever owned.
I'm not sure I knew much of the music on that little tape, but somehow, even my young heart knew that this was a momentous occasion. There was power to behold in my hand by the tree that long-ago Christmas.
That moment, a Bon Jovi fan was born.
All right, all right. That's hokey, I know. What can I say — even then, in my provincial hometown deep in the heart of western Pennsylvania, I knew I belonged in Jersey.
Not to mention I'd developed my first crush . . . on the coolly coiffed Jon Bon Jovi. That crush exists to this day.
Fast-forward a few years, when Vanilla Ice and C+C Music Factory were briefly cool, and Bon Jovi was not. Sad to say, "Slippery When Wet" and "New Jersey" were hidden in a closet. I succumbed to MC Hammer and let the Jersey boys slip away.
A few years later, "Keep the Faith" and a rejuvenated Bon Jovi let my inner groupie tentatively resurface at last.
