The first bit of this article about Don Henley's The End of the Innocence highlights where JBJ often falls short with political songs. Subtlety over preaching is the general gist, which I think is where songs like AR fail, even if I do quite like the song.

There's nothing wrong with preaching I think, it's just that when it's coming from Jon Bon Jovi it makes it kind of hard to believe with him supposedly being so Democrat while often acting like a Republican. I've travelled through over 20 states by now and after talking with Americans and overhearing conversations there's nothing about Jon Bon Jovi in the past 20 years that have made me think he's able to relate to the issues faced by the common American not living in the cities or states he visits.

The beauty of Don Henley's lyrics is him writing about issues caused by everyone responsible thus meaning both Parties. Don Henley doesn't write "This is caused by you", Don Henley writes "This is the result of our actions'.

Jon Bon Jovi writes about things "caused" by Republicans. He goes out saying "I'm against gun-ownership" while writing "If there's something we can talk about...". There isn't, when you say you're against it. He just isn't able to relate to these things and is guilty for not trying to meet somewhere in the middle.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

2020 is the first Bon Jovi album I haven’t bought. I got the songs via Amazon Prime. I can respect the songwriting, but there’s nothing about these political/topical songs that makes me want to listen to them repeatedly. I have no desire to hear any of them live ever. A hugely disappointing release.

I think that's a really interesting point. Playing the blame game and then pretending to bridge the divide doesn't work.

I don't think JBJ is too divisive on 2020. That's not the thing, really.

The issue is that these issues go deeper than Democrats vs. Republicans. If you wanna make the whole thing work without throwing down the gauntlet (who'd want a clear stance in their rock & roll), then make it about human things. But JBJ ain't gonna be all about the bigger picture or critical of late stage capitalism in general.

He's not THAT political, and he's not good enough a story teller (which Springsteen is) to make the lyrics work on the purely micro scale instead. But even on that level, the black/white filter he runs stuff through makes the tales seem detached from the real thing. Oh well.

"Work for the Working Man" and "What's Left of Me" were his attempts that kinda stuff, but they were so vague they might have as well worked for Trump's base. He'd need to get MORE precise, not even more vague.
